A new kind of primary school for the North East
Liberty School is an independent, progressive primary school based in the heart of the North East, in Blaydon. Opening in 2026, Liberty School has been created for children from Reception to Year 6, offering a small, nurturing and ambitious learning environment where every child can be truly known, valued and understood.
The school has been designed around the belief that education should be as unique as the children we teach. At Liberty School, children are supported through a democratic, child-centred and practical approach to learning. This means pupils are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas, follow interests, take part in meaningful projects and apply their skills through real-life experiences.
Liberty School combines high expectations with a different way of learning. Children still build strong foundations in English, mathematics, science and the wider curriculum, but learning is brought to life through play, movement, creativity, Forest School, enterprise, community experiences and hands-on activities. The aim is not simply to help children remember information, but to help them understand it, use it and grow from it.
With a small school community and limited places, Liberty School offers the personal attention of a small setting while creating the breadth of opportunities families would expect from a much larger school. Why Liberty School was created
Liberty School was created because we believe there is a need for something different in the North East. Over many years of working with children, families and education settings, we have seen that many children are capable, curious and full of potential, but do not always thrive in a traditional school model.
For some children, learning becomes too formal too soon. Play, movement, curiosity and creativity can reduce as children move beyond early years, even though these are often the very things that help them learn best. Some children need more time, more practical experiences, more opportunities to talk, more movement and more chances to apply their learning in the real world.
Liberty School was developed from the belief that children can still achieve highly while learning in a more active, purposeful and engaging way. The school brings together the strongest parts of early years practice, progressive education, specialist teaching, dyslexia-informed approaches and real-life learning to create a different kind of primary school experience.
This is not about lowering expectations. It is about raising ambition in a way that works for the whole child. Liberty School has been created for families who want their child to receive a strong education, but in an environment where confidence, curiosity, communication, independence and wellbeing are also seen as essential parts of success.
What makes Liberty School different
What makes Liberty School different is the combination of size, philosophy and approach. Liberty School is intentionally small, with a close community where staff have the time to know each child properly. This allows teaching to be more personal, relationships to be stronger and support to be more responsive.
Learning at Liberty School is practical, purposeful and connected. Children do not spend the whole day sitting at a desk or learning in one fixed way. They move between classrooms, outdoor spaces, Forest School, community settings and project-based learning. They may explore maths through enterprise, develop language through storytelling and public speaking, investigate science outdoors or connect learning to local visits and real experiences.
Liberty School also has a strong dyslexia-informed foundation. It is not a specialist dyslexia school, but specialist knowledge has shaped the way teaching is planned and delivered. Clear instructions, structured literacy, multisensory learning, practical tasks, regular revisiting and flexible ways to show understanding all help to make learning more accessible for every child.
The school is also built around pupil voice. Children are encouraged to contribute ideas, ask questions, make appropriate choices and take responsibility for their learning. Teachers still guide the curriculum carefully, but children are not passive learners. They are active participants in their school community.
